THE HISTORY OF FLIMSEE®

Seemingly ordinary events have led to some of history’s greatest
discoveries and inventions. Consider the timeline: Sir Isaac Newton observing the
velocity of a simple falling apple in 1687 formulated the Universal Law of Gravitation. A
fallen torsion spring led to Richard James’ Slinky in 1943. The tossing of a used pie tin
led to Walter Morrison producing the Pluto Platter in 1948. Then in 2008, John Mally
saw a gliding Frisbee strike a snow pole with a cup resting on top. When this happened,
both the cup and an idea that would forever change outdoor games were launched.
Some call it luck. Others call it fate. We call it Flimsee®.

It’s an activity that began its popularization on Put in Bay Island with a group of friends
looking to add some friendly competition to their weekend. Standard lawn games barely
kept their attention and the slanted boards sat in the grass, unused. Once that
175gram Ultrastar missed its intended target (hands) and struck the pole, Mally and his
friends discovered the remedy for their boredom. They gathered sticks, cups, and
discs. They arranged them, formed teams, made rules, and fashioned a makeshift
version of what has evolved into an ultimate disc-throwing showdown coined as
Flimsee. From there, John Mally devoted his tax return and every spare moment he
had to finding the ideal equipment for this game. You see, the crude provisions used on
Put-in-Bay just wouldn’t cut it. The cups kept breaking, the sticks were not safe, and
the Ultimate Frisbees were too big to make the game sufficiently challenging. After
ordering and testing dozens of cups, discs, and poles, he finally assembled the first and
finest Flimsee Set available. From there, Mally assembled a talented group of friends
and family who shared the love and vision for Flimsee, and together they have
developed the game into an ‘Instant Classic.’

What started as a rudimentary way to pass the time has evolved into a portable lawn
game that provides thousands of families with a lifelong kit of fun, costing around forty
bucks and weighing less than four pounds. Buy it. Play it. Share It. That’s our Flimsee
